Simbambili day 3 – morning game drive

The weather this morning was beautiful, clear skies, with a gentle breeze. The sunrises here are something special, the sun greets the day with an amazing orange glow and then peaks out above the trees to welcome the day.

Our drive was fairly tame today in comparison to the action that was yesterday. Still riding through the African bush is an magical experience, the sounds of the birds and their colours is just amazing. Not to mention the calls of the hyena in the distance, we had heard them throughout the night and hoped today to see some.

We weren’t disappointed, we spotted two lying in the grass on the side of the road and stopped to watch them for a while. They like many other animals here seem totally at ease with vehicles moving around and stopping to look at them. Don’t for a moment though forget that these are wild animals and can attack at any time. As we move off they yawn and just go back to relaxing in the cool morning air.

Again leopard tracks are spotted but after a while looking we still haven’t sighted the male we are tracking. Liam, our guide, and Mumpsa, our tracker, decide at this point to leave the group of us in the landrover while they go for a walk into the bush to see if they can get a better sighting. It’s quite unnerving to be left alone in the vehicle without a weapon, although they did say to call them on the radio if anything happened. Luckily nothing did, although Liam did come back alone and then drove away….. We picked Mumpsa up a little way down the road, he just appeared out of the scrub.

After some more driving we came across a large breeding herd of elephants, there must have been about 50 of them spread out on both sides of the road. We sat there for about twenty minutes just watching the mothers and their young, such a beautiful sight to see the way they nurture the young and guide them. Such a shame that my card reader is not cooperating, we have some amazing photos.

Sitting in the lodge as I type this we’ve just had a visit from a monkey, he’d come to steal sugar from behind the bar. So cheeky.
